Dr. MacDonell was raised in San Francisco Bay Area. Growing up the youngest in a family of 10 children taught him patience and tolerance.  Since the age of 7, Dr. MacDonell wanted to become a physician.  He saw medicine as a way to help others and challenge his intellect. 

Dr. MacDonell majored in Philosophy at Boston College and went on to complete his Masters in Physiology at Georgetown University.  From 1991-1995, he attended Georgetown University Medical School. By 1998, he completed his 3 year residency training in Internal Medicine at University of Washington affiliate in Spokane, WA. During medical school and residency, he volunteered as part of a medical team in both the Dominican Republic and Honduras to help indigent people.

In 1998, Dr. MacDonell and moved to San Francisco, CA.  He worked 2 years as a Hospitalist and one year in a group practice before moving to Bend in 2001.  He started a solo practice in Bend because he wanted a small town environment to establish relationships with patients and provide them with a very personal health care experience.  He also wanted to raise a family and enjoy the outdoors. He enjoys spending time with his family and other activities such as water polo, wind surfing, fly-fishing, surfing, mountain biking, triathlons, camping, and playing guitar.

Dr. Mac Donell’s philosophy is about achieving balance both at home, work and play.
